ST. PETERSBURG – Bay News 9 reports that a 16-year-old St. Petersburg girl was killed while a passenger in an SUV driven by another 16-year-old girl. According to reports, the SUV was west on 40th Avenue Northeast when the driver became distracted and looked away from the roadway. Subsequently, the SUV veered to the right, jumping the curb and going up onto a sidewalk. The SUV continued onto a concrete barrier that separates the roadway and the sidewalk along the bridge near the Shore Acres neighborhood. The SUV became elevated and impacted metal guardrails that lined the north wall of the bridge. A portion of the metal guardrail went through the passenger’s side windshield, killing the 16-year-old passenger upon impact. The driver of the SUV was treated for minor injuries at All Children’s Hospital and released.
