TAMPA – Police and state highway officials are cautioning motorists to slow down and buckle up this Memorial Day weekend, the season’s deadliest time for driving. The Florida Highway Patrol says 27 people died in accidents it investigated during the 96-hour Memorial Day weekend, including 19 who failed to wear seat belts. The number was slightly down from previous the previous year at 29 deaths. FHP Capt. Mark Welch said the patrol reported 83 alcohol-related collisions during the 2008 holiday weekend, but did not have a figure on how many of those may have been involved in the fatal accidents.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said, “Contributing to the toll are drivers who don’t buckle up, drive too fast and drink alcohol. About a third of Florida’s highway fatalities two years ago involved alcohol, which is slightly higher than the national average.”
