Bart Bryant Dead at 59 After Car Accident

PGA golfer Bart Bryant dies in auto accident

POLK COUNTY, FL – 3 time winner on the PGA Tour, Bart Bryant, was killed in a car accident after making a routine stop in traffic. A construction crew slowed traffic, causing the standstill, when the truck slammed into Bryant’s SUV. When Polk City responders arrived, they found him unresponsive, and he was officially ruled deceased at a local hospital. His second wife, Donna, who was in the SUV with him, only suffered minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office released a statement that detailed similar information. However, the investigation is ongoing. Either way, the PGA Tour and golf community were quick to lend their support.

Love and Support

“The PGA TOUR is saddened by the tragic passing of Bart Bryant and our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “The Bryants have been a part of the PGA TOUR family for over four decades and we are grateful for the impact and legacy he made on our organization and countless communities. Bart will be dearly missed.”

Begay III, a 4-time PGA Tour winner said, “Bart Bryant and his brother Brad have always been so good to me when I first began my career on the PGA Tour. We were so proud of our New Mexico connection, them being raised in Alamogordo and myself in Albuquerque. I was so deeply saddened by the news of his tragic car accident. My deepest condolences go out to his family.”

Career in Golf

In the 1990s, Bart faced a recurring shoulder and elbow issue that brought him to the brink of quitting golf. Instead, he powered through training and mini-tours, enabling him play in his early 40s. Surprisingly, Bryant won all 3 PGA rounds after turning 40.

In 2004, Bryant reeled in his first PGA win at the Texas open. He followed up the next season with another win at Muirfield Village against Fred Couples to win the Memorial. But perhaps his greatest accomplishment on the course took place at the Tour Championship at East Lake. It was at the Tour Championship that Bryant defeated Tiger Woods by six shots, making that the greatest deficit Woods experienced as runner-up.

Bigger than Golf

“He was a champion on and off the course and will be dearly missed by many,” the PGA Tour Champions tweeted.

Because of his success and perseverance through his physical ailment, he was awarded the Ben Hogan Award by the Golf Writers Association of America in 2006.

Since his first wife passed from brain cancer in 2017, Bryant is now survived by his second wife and 2 daughters.
